Lasya is an institute; an organization founded and promoted by our Guru Rajashree Shirke. She is the Founder-director of Lasya Trust and the Principal of The Lasya Centre for Dance Education And Research.

Lasya was founded in 1980 by Guru Rajashree Shirke – with the simple goal of sharing the sheer joy of Indian Classical dance that she had experienced with her students and audiences over the years.

Year 2000-2003 witnessed the birth of Lasya Trust & the ‘Lasya Centre for Dance Education and Research’ that offered Diploma & Advanced Diploma courses in Kathak; affiliated to the SNDT Women’s University’s – Department of Lifelong Learning & extension.

Production & Workshops

At LASYA, our mission is to cultivate expressive, articulate performers who excel both individually and as part of a collective. Our choreography emphasizes the poetry of hands and glances, enriching the music with emotional depth through the art of ‘Abhinaya.’

Joining our creative dance productions means embracing our high standards and achieving excellence. Our productions, widely recognized and acclaimed nationwide, encompass a diverse range of traditional dances, dance ballets, thematic presentations, and theatre-dance endeavors that tackle various societal issues.

ABOUT THE GURU

As a respected Guru, Rajashree Shirke has dedicated over three decades to mastering the intricacies of Kathak, a classical Indian dance form. Trained under the late Guru (Smt.) Madhurita Sarang,she immersed herself in Kathak’s rich traditions, exploring the diverse Gharanas of Lucknow, Banaras, and Jaipur. Seeking further enrichment, she also ventured into Bharatnatyam under the guidance of Dr. (Smt.) Kanak Rele.

Today, Guru Rajashree stands as a respected Guru, renowned for her disciplined approach to training and her ability to infuse joy and expression into her performances. As the Founder-Director and Principal of the Lasya Centre For Dance Education and Research, she shares her expertise with aspiring dancers, shaping the next generation of Kathak enthusiasts. Her journey exemplifies dedication, perseverance, and a deep-rooted passion for Indian classical dance.

Awards & Achievement

  • Received the SANGEET NATAK AKADEMI AWARD (2013) for her contribution to the field of Indian Classical Dance (Kathak).
  • Received the Marathi Sahitya Sangh Award for work in experimental theater and creativity in Sangeet Natak in 2003 & 2006 respectively.
  • Received the Best Actress Award for short-film “Pahaat” for the Asian International Short-Film Festival and the Rotary Club Mumbai.
